Cabernet franc

Grape varieties: Cabernet franc

Synonyms
In Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, the grape is known as "Bouchet". The variety is also found in Madiran vineyards where it is called "Bouchy". Further north, in the Loire Valley, particularly Touraine and Saumur, it sometimes goes by the name of "Breton".

Definition
Cabernet Franc is used mostly in the Bordeaux region. It's a variety with small bunches and small black grapes. It's appreciated by winemakers because it is undemanding: any soil suits it.

However Cabernet Franc is less flavorful and less structured, which is why it is often combined with other grape varieties. The only regions making 100% Cabernet Franc wines are in the Loire Valley: Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur-Champigny reds.

Wine and aromas
Like Cabernet Sauvignon wines, Cabernet Franc wines have a bright lively color. They have flavors of strawberries and wild blackberries.

Terroirs
Pomerol, Saint Emilion, Bourgueil, Saumur, Madiran, etc
